I Let AI Redesign My Canvas Pages (And You Should Too)

My latest favorite way of using AI in my classroom is to vastly improve the look of my Canvas course pages and assignments. Update: I've built a custom tool in Magic School called HTML Improver . You can make a copy of it for yourself and use it to quickly improve the HTML of any Canvas page. It's easier than working with Claude or ChatGPT. Once you make a copy of the tool, click generate. Google AI Educator Series: Free AI Lessons for Teachers

At this time last week I was at Google, enjoying a lovely meal on the patio of Charlie's cafe with educator colleagues from all over the country. We were there for a two day convening to learn more about the Google AI Educator Series , or GES as they call it. Full disclosure, Google paid for my travel to the event. Which is remarkable in that for the 15+ years I've been involved in Google events, the teacher academies, energizers, and champion summits, Google has never once paid for any of my travel expenses before. That alone told me this would be something different. So what is GES? Quite simply, it is a collection of short lessons on AI literacy, focusing on Google Gemini of course, that teachers can do independently or as part of a professional learning event. One Google Doc All Year Long: The English Journal

My students each share a Google Doc with me in September and they use that doc all year long. We call it their English Journal and it holds all of the small daily work we do. This is one of the secrets of my 1:1 classroom and it is such an ordinary part of our workflow that I have rarely thought to write about it. Let’s fix that. The challenge for any educator is knowing what kinds of work and thinking students are actually doing in our classes. The traditional way of gaining this insight was to collect papers: homework, notes, reflections, quick writes, exit slips, graphic organizers, etc. It all happened on paper and we collected it to look at--or at least to make students think we looked at it. Curriculum Planner Spreadsheet for Secondary Teachers: You can have a copy

I'm a big fan of teacher collaboration. (I wasn't always, but that's another post.) My team has been collaborating together, in various combinations, since 2011. At first we organized each unit in an excel sheet in a shared dropbox folder. Now we mostly use a Google Drive folder and instead of a separate spreadsheet for each unit, we have combined them all into one year long planning sheet. Each year we make a copy of this living document and start changing. It's messy. It contains some legacy stuff we don't really use. It's incomplete sometimes, but it gives us a starting point for our conversations. It holds our end of unit reflections about what did or did not work well for our students last year. NBCT: Component 1: The three hour test

Stock Photo: Not from the testing center. In the summer of 2016 I began the process of National Board Certification. I stumbled upon a program from our county office that supports teachers through the process over two years. I just finished Component 1 and 2. For more on Component 2 see my previous post . While Component 2 is a year long process of collecting student work and writing about it, Component 1 is a test I took last weekend. This test counts for 40% of my overall NBCT score, and that's more than any other component.
